About this event
If you’re a backyard beekeeper, you’re probably a gardener, too. Learn how to get your growing season — and the bees' foraging season — off to a great start with
Doug Tallamy, a renowned expert on pollinators and plants.
Dr. Tallamy’s books, including Bringing Nature Home, The Nature of Oaks and Nature’s Best Hope, have launched national conversations about how our approach to gardening must change. He contends that widespread planting of ornamental invasive plants displaces the diverse and stable food webs that run our ecosystems.
In this presentation, Dr. Tallamy, a professor of entomology and wildlife ecology at the University of Delaware, will use data from several studies to make the case that plant choice matters. Planting natives — particularly “keystone plants” that support the most insect life — can help restore biodiversity and provide forage for all insect species, including honey bees.
Dr. Tallamy’s newest book, How Can I Help? Saving Nature with Your Yard, which will be published in April, offers even more actionable advice for beekeepers, gardeners and all nature lovers. That may include stocking up on nutrient-rich and beautiful calico asters, wrinkleleaf goldenrod, golden groundsel, woodland stonecrop and spicebush — many of which will be available at the CCBA plant sale on April 26!
